ECaS Workshop Sharpens Communication Skills in Valencia

Valencia, October 20, 2025 - The European Scientific Working Group on Influenza (ESWI) opened its 10th Influenza Conference with a lively and inspiring start! Among the great sessions of the day, the Workshop on Communicating Science was held for Early Career Scientists (ECaS). The session set the tone for the exciting talks ahead, combining skills-building with enthusiasm and collaboration among early career researchers.

The workshop was designed to give young scientists practical tools to communicate their research clearly and confidently, both within academia and in broader audiences. But it was also about connecting with peers, sharing experiences, and having a bit of fun while learning something new. Participants worked together to explore how good communication can make science more accessible and impactful.

Leading the session was Aida Bakri, Director of the ESWI Secretariat and a seasoned Public Affairs Consultant and TEDx speaker. Drawing on her experience, she guided participants through the essentials of storytelling, presentation structure, and audience engagement, all while keeping the room energised and interactive.

Aida reminded participants that effective communication starts with one simple question: “Who is this for, and why should they care?” She encouraged them to adapt their messages for different audiences, simplify without losing meaning, and most importantly, stay authentic

Throughout the workshop, early career scientists were introduced to a practical “toolbox” for better delivery, everything from using body language and breathing techniques to choosing the right words and pace. They also explored how to structure a talk using Aristotle’s guide to persuasion: Ethos (credibility), Pathos (passion), and Logos (logic).

The final part of the session turned theory into practice. Participants practiced presenting their own research abstracts, testing the new approaches and learning from each other. The mix of collaboration, laughter, and shared curiosity made for a truly engaging experience.

By the end of the session, it was clear that the workshop had done more than teach communication skills, it had built confidence, sparked new connections, and reminded everyone that learning together can be both valuable and enjoyable.

We look forward to tonight’s session, where we will explore some of the future career prospects for Early Career Scientists during our panel discussion, organised at the Melia Hotel. If you wish to register, please contact Floris.Hoffmann@eswi.org.
